In 2017, the percentage of potential years of life lost (PYLL) per 100,000 population due to selected alcohol related causes are below average for females (200.7, per 100,000 population, National 298.2 per 100,000) and for males are also below average (794.3 per 100,000 population, National 1006.10). In 2017, Mayo was below average for hospital admission rate for mental and behaviour disorders due to alcohol (70.0 per 100,000 population, National 83.74) and below average for alcoholic liver disease (22.9 per 100,000 population, National 36.48). In 2017, Mayo was average for psychiatric in-patient rates per 100,000 for alcohol disorders for first admissions (9.3 per 100,000 population, National 9.2) and for all admissions ( 20.7 per 100,000 population, National 24.1). In 2017, Mayo had one of the lowest alcohol treatment rates at 63.5 per 100,000 population (National 153.2). In January 2019, Mayo ranked 2nd for the number of liquor licenses with 423.73per 100,000 (National 273.13).
