The increasing shortage of organs is a major issue for transplant services worldwide. Internationally, the number of patients included in waiting lists has been increasing while the number of donors and organs available for transplantation has reached a plateau. Because organ transplantation is very successful as a treatment for end-stage organ failure it has become essential to identify and monitor the potential for organ donation in order to ensure adequate consideration is given to donation in all relevant circumstances.en
