Depression symptoms and the perception of public health restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic in Saudi Arabia: The protective effect of sense of control.The psychological impact of public health restrictions may play a role in the increased depression levels reported since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Data further suggest that people's sense of personal control has been reduced during the pandemic also producing psychological distress. This study aimed to test whether perceptions of public health restrictions predict depression under pandemic conditions and if the sense of control can serve as a protective factor. For this cross-sectional study, 641 residents in Saudi Arabia over the age of 17 years were recruited between November and December of 2020 to complete an online survey. The survey assessed depression levels (Beck Depression Inventory, BDI), the sense of control and perceptions of public health restrictions. Demographic information was also collected. Depression levels were higher compared to previous samples (d = 0.12). The number of restrictions perceived as distressing strongly predicted the probability of high BDI scores, β = 0.92 , with higher sense of control predicting lower levels of depression (constraints, β = - 0.50 , mastery, β = - 0.71 ). A strong sense of control significantly reduced the impact of the perception of restrictions on depression. These results suggest that the perception of public health restrictions is part of the reason for increased levels of depression during the pandemic. A strong sense control reduced the impact of restrictions on depression. It is therefore possible that simple interventions enhancing the sense of control, such as the availability of choice, could support mental health in restricted situations.

Exclusive Human Milk Diet for Extremely Premature Infants: A Novel Fortification Strategy That Enhances the Bioactive Properties of Fresh, Frozen, and Pasteurized Milk Specimens.Background: Human milk (HM) fortification has been recommended for the nutritional optimization of very low-birthweight infants. This study analyzed the bioactive components of HM and evaluated fortification choices that could accentuate or attenuate the concentration of such components, with special reference to human milk-derived fortifier (HMDF) offered to extremely premature infants as an exclusive human milk diet. Materials and Methods: An observational feasibility study analyzed the biochemical and immunochemical characteristics of mothers' own milk (MOM), both fresh and frozen, and pasteurized banked donor human milk (DHM), each supplemented with either HMDF or cow's milk-derived fortifier (CMDF). Gestation-specific specimens were analyzed for macronutrients, pH, total solids, antioxidant activity (AA), α-lactalbumin, lactoferrin, lysozyme, and α- and β-caseins. Data were analyzed for variance applying general linear model and Tukey's test for pairwise comparison. Results: DHM exhibited significantly lower (p < 0.05) lactoferrin and α-lactalbumin concentrations than fresh and frozen MOM. HMDF reinstated lactoferrin and α-lactalbumin and exhibited higher protein, fat, and total solids (p < 0.05) in comparison to unfortified and CMDF-supplemented specimens. HMDF had the highest (p < 0.05) AA, suggesting the potential capability of HMDF to enhance oxidative scavenging. Conclusion: DHM, compared with MOM, has reduced bioactive properties, and CMDF conferred the least additional bioactive components. Reinstatement and further enhancement of bioactivity, which has been attenuated through pasteurization of DHM, is demonstrated through HMDF supplementation. Freshly expressed MOM fortified with HMDF and given early, enterally, and exclusively (3E) appears an optimal nutritional choice for extremely premature infants.

Knowledge and attitudes towards cervical cancer prevention among women in Khartoum state, Sudan.The study included 716 female participants with a mean age of 27.6 + 8.7 years. 580 (81.0%) and 229 (32.0%) had heard about cervical cancer and Pap test, respectively. cervical cancer was assumed related to alcohol consumption 109 (15.2%), giving birth to many children 51 (7.1%), ageing 118 (16.5%), and having many sexual partners 335 (46.8%). In addition, 300 (41.9%) attributed cervical cancer to having human papillomavirus infection, 256 (35.6%) to the prolonged use of contraceptives, and 162 (22.6%) to smoking. Knowledge about the best time to be vaccinated against human papillomavirus, 110 (15.4%) stated it is better after marriage. Regression models to predict the effectors on participants' knowledge and attitudes showed a low standard deviation of the estimates with higher values of the adjusted R2 [R: 0.041, 0.017, and 0.006; std: 1.527, 0.417, and 0.426]. This indicates the combined influence of occupation, educational level, family income, and marital status on the participant's knowledge and attitude levels.
