This report outlines the status of sepsis in Ireland in 2017 based on data extracted from the hospital inpatient enquiry (HIPE) dataset. Much has been made of the limitations of administrative or claims based datasets when compared to electronic healthcare record data, fortunately the project for developing such as system in Ireland has started. All datasets have limitations and are dependent on methodologies used to identify and extract datasets. The strengths in this report include the education of the acute healthcare sector and the coders in a standardised approach to assessment and documentation of sepsis and using a consistent dataset. We acknowledge the change in sepsis definition so that the systemic inflammatory response to infection without organ dysfunction (R65.0) is no longer included in the suite of sepsis diagnosis. For the purpose of trend data this diagnosis continues to be included, however, for 2017 standalone data it is not and this is clearly documented where this occurs.en_US
