dc.description | Although significant progress has been made in Ireland in the last decade in terms of reducing the prevalence of smoking (from 29% in 2006 to 22% in 2017), tobacco still remains the leading cause of preventable death with over 100 people dying each week in Ireland from smoking related diseases. The government has set a target to reduce smoking prevalence to less than 5% by 2025 and has highlighted the need for comprehensive tobacco monitoring. Further inroads in Ireland will require a twin focus on preventing smoking initiation and promoting smoking cessation. Smoking typically initiates in youth and, given the highly addictive properties of nicotine, a high proportion will continue smoking into adulthood with devastating health consequences. Adult smoking patterns are usually established in adolescence. Most smokers start to smoke before the age of 18.6 Early onset of smoking increases the associated health risks.4 It is also associated with heavier smoking and less likelihood of quitting.7, 8 Preventing smoking initiation in youth, therefore, is a key focus for comprehensive tobacco control and continues to be a priority for the HSE Tobacco Free Ireland Programme. Recent progress in preventing youth initiation is illustrated in Figure 1. | en |
