This report, The Childhood Obesity Surveillance Initiative (COSI) in the Republic of Ireland: Descriptives of childhood obesity predictors, details the findings from the analysis of the Family Questionnaire carried out in 2010 and 2012. The Family Questionnaire was designed to collect data on possible predictors of childhood obesity – child’s diet, physical activity pattern, their family’s socioeconomic characteristics and co-morbidities. The analysis includes a comparison between those attending DEIS schools and other schools. While the possible risk factors contributing to childhood obesity were similar across both groups of children, some significant differences were observed between children attending DEIS designated schools compared with other schools. Although the numbers for comparison were rather small, the findings provide some insight and contextualisation to the general COSI survey results, where no improvement in the rates of overweight and obesity amongst children attending DEIS schools was observed.en
