The available data on Irish Travellers shows that they experience a level of health that is far worse than that enjoyed by the general population. The All-Ireland Traveller Health Study (2010) emphasises the need for a concerted effort to address long-term diseases. These diseases are recognised as being a major health challenge in Ireland. The importance of a culturally appropriate programme to begin to address, in particular diabetes and cardiovascular disease, needs special attention. This is why this educational programme has been developed. The programme has been developed in partnership with the Traveller community through many of the Primary Health Care programmes across the country. This makes it acceptable to and accessible by the Traveller community.en
