dc.description	In 1994 the Department of Health Published “A National Breastfeeding Policy for Ireland”. The department’s policy in relation to infant feeding is stated as:- “It is recognised that breast feeding is the most satisfactory method of infant feeding for the normal infant from birth. It is the Department of Health’s policy to promote and encourage breastfeeding. It is recognised and agreed by all that when a mother can produce enough milk and wants to breastfeed her infant she should be encouraged to do so but it is also emphasised that for those mothers who choose not to breastfeed and those who do not have enough breastmilk, artificial feeding would be necessary and alternatives to human breastmilk must be available. Mothers who are not able to breastfeed must not be made to feel inadequate. It is the right of the mother to make an informed choice about how she wishes to feed her infant”.	en
