Irish health services face the challenge of providing high-quality healthcare that is equitable, accessible and delivered In an efficient and effedlve manner. The ever-changing demographic and epidemiological profile of the Irish population has implications for both the management and the delivery of healthcare services. Given that nurses and midwives currently account for 40% of the health services workforce, their role and scope of practice within these services continues to be of paramount importance to the success of healthcare provision in Ireland. It is timely, therefore, that An Bord Altranais has commenced a review of the scope of nursing and midwifery practice. The review consists of a consultative process that will inform a scope of pratice document. The project is co-ordinated by a project team consisting of a project officer and a project assistant. Support and guidance are provided by a steering committee that has widespread representation from the health services. The project will be completed in April 2000.en
