In 2002 the Rotunda Hospital provided its 257th year of unbroken service. The Rotunda continues in its objective of maintaining the highest quality of care to all mothers and babies under our care. 2002 was one of the busiest years on record with 6844 women delivering 6971 babies greater than 500g. The overall perinatal mortality rale was 8.3 per thousand and when congenital abnormalities were excluded the perinatal mortality rate was S.D. These are excellent results and the staff should he congratulated for their efforts. 2002 was the first year of my Mastership, There will always be new challenges at the beginning of any Masters term, but a pleasant challenge was the commencement of the long awaited building programme. Roheon Construction Company should be given credit for their consideration in trying to minimise disruption to the very busy clinical service. Our staff and patients should also be applauded for their perseverance and patience. The early phases of the new Paediatric Unit and the postnatal facilities have been completed and the hospital looks forward to the full completion of both jobs.
