| dc.description | The purpose of this volume is to bring together in easily accessible form up-to-date mortality statistics for cancer for the Republic of Ireland. Because of small numbers in many of the malignant neoplasms studied rates and standardised mortality ratios (SMR) have been calculated for the I I year period 1976-86. Basic data only is presented: it is planned to produce a further volume with detailed analysis of the patterns of cancer seen, discussion of certification and coding of cancer for statistical purposes and comparison with statistics from other countries. Sources of Data The primary source of data for mortality statistics is the death cenificate, a copy of which is shown as Appendix 1. The cause of death registered for statistical purposes is the underlying cause of death and is that diagnosis described on the death certificate as antecedent cause of death; if a malignant neoplasm is recorded as antecedent cause of death under (b) or (c) that death is included in national mortality statistics as being due to cancer. The registration and coding of cause of death is carried out in the Registrar General's Office; all deaths are coded according to the rubric of the International Classification of Diseases (1,2) and are assigned three or four digit codes, - in the case of malignant neoplasms ICD 140-208.9 inclusive. Statistics are collated and analysed in the Central Statistics Office (CSO) and annual repons on vital statistics are published; the most recent report available to the authors was for 1985 (3). | en |
