dc.description | Speaking at the Nursing and Midwifery Summit, the Director General welcomed the opportunity to join with nurses and midwives from across our diverse health services to celebrate nursing and midwifery on international nurses day 2015. The Health Services are going through a period where it is necessary to restructure and redefine the health services and how it operates. The establishment of Hospital Groups and Community Healthcare Organisations are visible examples of the structural reform but underpinning this is the People Purpose and Passion (the conference themes) required to make real change happen. The director General noted it was opportune that we take time to reflect and to discuss the contribution of nursing and midwifery to healthcare. Nursing and midwifery long and rich history (based on caring, compassion and competence) should not be underestimated in its past and future contribution to healthcare. Nursing and midwifery history supports nurses and midwives, at all levels, deal with the challenges we face - now, and in the future, and in particular in providing patient care that is safe, person centred, evidence based and of the highest quality. Care, compassion and competence are also the underpinning values of our recently published Corporate Plan – where we committed to the values of care, compassion, trust and learning. As part of Director General’s address today, he will focus on: • The opportunities and challenges facing nursing and midwifery • the vision for the health services as outlined in the Corporate Plan 2015-2017 • The importance of nursing and midwifery as the champions for the culture change and in delivering high quality, safe, compassionate and person centred care and services. | en |
