| dc.description | In March 1997, the Minister for Health established the Commission on Nursing to examine and report on the role of nurses in the health service. The terms of reference of the Commission were extended in September 1997 to include the role and function of An Bord Altranais. The outgoi ng Board met with the Commission and made written submissions on the Role of Nurses in the Health Services and the Future Role of An Bord Altranais as the statutory regulatory body for nurses in Ireland. The incoming Board takes up office as the Commission is moving towards the completion of its report and we look forward to meeting with the Commission at an early date. Developments arising from the Commission's recommendations in relation to professional regulation will undoubtedly involve An Bord Altranais and we look forward to working with all interested parties in implementing the recommendations. During 1997, An Bord published Continuing Professional Education for Nurses in Ireland : A Framework. The publication is the work of a committee set up in 1995 to examine the continuing professional needs of nurses and midwives in the health services and to develop a Continuing Education Framework The recommendations of this report are serving to inform and develop policies in Ireland in relation to continuing education and will, no doubt. contribute greatly to the work of the Commission. | en |
