In publishing this advisory report, prepared for it by the Department of Heallh Promotion, University College Galway, the National Council for the Elderly wishes to contribute further to the task of promoting the health and well-being of older people, In this instance, the Council is concerned to focus particularly on social care of the frail and dependent elderly and to highlight the importance of appropriate training to good practice in providing this care. The advisory report demonstrates that more widespread availability of training would have a positive impact on the lives of older people in receipt of social care and on those who provide such care. many of whom are older people themselves. The report raises important issues in relation to social care of older people and in relation to the education and training of those who provide that care. The findings of the research conducted for the study contribute considerably to the debate on education and training for social care. And the overview of existing education and training provides a useful picture of how training in social care is developing in Ireland.en
