| dc.description | Dr. Geoffrey Dean retired at the end of 1985 bringing to a close a successful term of office as first Director of the Medico-Social Research Board. Since 1968, when he took up duty, Dr. Dean, with modest staff and financial resources, developed the Board into an organisation which has earned for itself an honoured national and international reputation in epidemiological research. His work, which is described in detail in reports issued annually by the Board since 1969, was centered on two main areas. He initiated and directed a wide ranging programme of research into the medico-social problems of Ireland, covering such areas as mental illness, mental handicap, child health, ischaemic heart disease and stroke, multiple sclerosis and, more recently, the growing problem of substance abuse in our community. He also took a keen interest in measures aimed at improving the quality and comprehensiveness of health vital statistics in this country. in particular mortality statistics. and in tandem with this he co-ordinated the work of the Board in developing health information systems such as the National Psychiatric In-Patient Reporting System and the Hospital In-Patient Enquiry Scheme. In retrospect, this may well prove to have been the most valuable aspect of. his work for the Board. These systems have already been used extensively in the planning and operation of health services in this country and will assume increasing importance as the drive to make our acute hospital services more cost effective gathers momentum. | en |
