The study was requested by the Department of Health to estimate the approximate costs incurred by teaching hospitals from their medical education, training and research functions. While it was clear that the bulk of undergraduate costs fell on the universities, there was a growing recognition that teaching hospitals incurred additional expenses as both undergraduates and non consultant hospital doctors (NCHDs) received hospital-based training. The costs incurred by teaching hospitals might include the time taken for formal and informal teaching and ward rounds; additional tests and consultations that arise in the teaching environment; more intensive or sophisticated treatments offered to patients; any consequent increase in length of stay; and certain research costs.en_GB
