dc.description | Mr Frank Fahey T.D., Minisler for State at the Deparment of Education I am pleased to have this opportunity to outline the Government's policy with regard to leisure and sports facilities for people with disabilities. The promotion and development of sport for people with disabilities is an important part of improving the quality of their life·as well as contributing to their rehabilitation and integration into society. I consider that the Sport for All policy is central to sport itself. Sport for All means participation at all levels and by all people including those with disabilities. There are a number of important reasons for promoting Sport for All for people with disabilities: 1. The overall participation rates for people with disabilities is much lower than for able-bodied people. 2. Sport adds to the quality of life of all those who participate. 3. The determination of those competing show that they can attain the highest levels. In somespons such as archery they can compete on an even basis as able-bodied people. The marathons all over the world have also proven the possibility of integration. 4. Sport is a necessary part to the reintegration of people with disabilities into all pans of society. The task of Government is to ensure that as far as possible their implementation. To ensure tbat every person has an opportunity to take part in sport at the level he or she would like. To this end Government supports the provision of a wide variety of sports facilities throughout the country at National level. | en_GB |
