| dc.description | Gastroenteritis has been a problem in Dublin City for many years. In 1941 diarrhoea and enteritis caused 506 infant deaths in Dublin City more than double the number ascribed to this cause in 1940. 'Diarrhoea and enteritis' became a notifiable infectious disease in Ireland in 1942. In· 1944 SI. Clare's Hospital, Dublin was opened-to care specifically for patients with gastroenteritis. It was closed in 1956-since then patients with gastroenteritis are admitted to the two Dublin Fever Hospitals-Cherry Orchard and Vergemount. 'Diarrhoea 'and enteritis' in children under the age of two years became a notifiable infectious disease in the Republic of Ireland in March 1948. Gastroenteritis is not a notifiable disease any place else in these Islands and, on this account, . it is not; possible to give relative figures of its incidence in comparable cities. Survey Personnel Presentation of Results During the 1950's the annual notification rate of gastroenteritis in Dublin City in children under the age of 2 years of age varied from 460 to 980 cases per year. In 1958 the number of such cases notified rose to 1,083. In the ensuing years (i.e. in the .early 1960's), .the Chief Medical Officer of the Dublin Health Authority, Dr. J. B. O'Regan became concerned at the persistently high and increasing annual notification rate of gastroenteritis in infants in Dublin ..
