dc.description	Health education in schools has always been central to the health services provided by the Mid-Western Health Board and has traditionally been catered for by the school medical service. In more recent times a new emphasis is required in response to changing needs. Greater importance is now being placed on health related behaviour and on individual responsibility for health. When allied to the growing concern about social issues, this has prompted the need for a more comprehensive approach to school health education. This report outlinei the origin, growth and development of this Board's response in the form of Social and Health Education projects at Primary and Post-Primary School levels in co-operation with the Departments of Health and Education. Structured programmes in social and health education are being developed for all school-going pupils, from Junior Infant to Leaving Certificate classes, comprising classroom materials, in-service training for teachers, parental support courses and supplementary classroom resources. In this report the origins, developments and current status of school based social and health education are traced since 1984, with recommendations for the future.	en_GB
