| dc.description | At the outset, it is acknowledged that the state of development of the radiological services in this country leaves much to be desired. In the past, a variety of factors have contributed to this developmental lag, experienced most acutely in the 1950's and 1960's. These included a severe shortage of consultant manpower (also experienced in other countries); economic factors; inadequate involvement of radiology and radiologists in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education; and the rapidly changing and expanding nature of the discipline, all of which led to a depressed demand for services. In more recent times, the position has shown a considerable improvement particularly in relation, to consultant manpower, increased investment in radiology equipment, support staff and other facilities. The Comhairle considers that the time is now opportune to look at the future development of this specialty to ensure that the growth, which is currently in evidence, will be in conformity with a rational plan designed to meet the needs and circumstances of the hospital services as well as to provide a professionally satisfying career for those doctors who may choose radiology as their specialty. | en_GB |
