The Comhairle policy in relation to the provision of Ear, Nose and Throat, Head and Neck Surgery (ENTHNS) services nationally was set out in its discussion document on the Development of Ear, Nose and Throat Services, November 1983 In a later study of ENT Services in the Southern Health Board area (November 1990) Comhairle endorsed the general principles set out in its 1983 report and made specific recommendations in relation to the Southern Health Board area. These reports pointed out that ENTHNS is a regional specialty and that it would not be justifiable to locate an ENTHNS unit at every general hospital. They also recommended the development of a major ENTHNS unit in Cork City and that "in-patient ENT surgery in Mallow Hospital be phased out on the cessation of the activity by the long-term temporary appointee who currently works on a part-time basis".en_GB
