This booklet has been produced as part of the ‘Your Mental Health’ awareness campaign, which aims to improve awareness and understanding of mental health and well-being in Ireland. It is hoped that this booklet will raise awareness, inform older people about mental health and dispel some fears people may have around mental health as they age. It aims to highlight some of the things we can do to look after our own mental health, encourages us to look out for the people around us and gives an overview of some common mental health problems in later life. It may also be a useful resource for family members, caregivers and friends. This booklet does not describe in detail the broad range of mental health problems in later life, but it does provide contact information for organisations that provide advice and help on mental health problems for older people in Ireland. Mental health problems can affect any of us at any time in our lives. Many older people who have mental health problems may not be diagnosed or get treatment. Mental health problems in later life are often a normal consequence of growing old. In reality, detecting and treating a mental health problem early on can lead to significant improvements in mental health and quality of life.en_GB
