dc.description | In 1981 the Department of Health initiated an annual survey of patients in long-stay units. The purpose of this survey was to provide statistics on a regular basis on the number of beds available for long-term care, how they are used and the type of patients who occupy them. Survey results were published each year from 1980 to 1990 inclusive. The present report, relating to the year 1994, is based on a new data collection system introduced in 1993 to update information requirements in the context of the Health (Nursing Homes) Act, 1990 (see POLICY OUTLINE, Appendix 1). The survey form (see Appendix 2) was revised to provide an age by sex breakdown and more detailed information on medico/social status, type of bed and category of unit. For the first time, data on subvention and level of dependency were requested. Definitions of variables are contained in the explanatory notes accompanying the survey form in Appendix 2.
