From early 1979, our Board has provided a specialist psychiatric Programme for the Homeless based at St. Brendan's Hospital, Dublin. The introduction of this programme was preceded by a year long survey to assess the characteristics and 'needs of the mentally ill of 'no-fixed-above" who were then availing of in-patient facilities in St. Brendan's Hospital in ever increasing numbers. Given the results of this survey (Appendix 11) emphasis was initially placed on caring for the needs of homeless males who then outnumbered homeless females by a ratio of over 4 :1en_GB
