This study was undertaken because of a perception that many acute hospital beds are occupied and blocked by patients who could more appropriatelv be cared for at a lower level of complexity. As a previous study relating to a Dublin hospital showed that it was appropriate for a high proportion of patients who had been admitted to the hospital, to have been so admitted, and as in this study the concern was with blocked acute beds, it was decided to limit the investigation to those patients who had been in hospital for 21 days or more. OBJECTIVES The object of the study was to:- Measure the extent to which patients were occupying acute hospital beds inappropriately.en_GB
