The four associated units that comprise the Specialist Section, namely the Hygiene Education Unit, the Food Standards Unit, the Communicable Diseases Unit and the Port Health Unit were amalgamated in 1996 for the purpose of concentrating an expertise which would be developed as a support for the wider Environmental Health Service within the Eastern Health Board region. The very obvious links between the activities in the four units has enabled us to adopt a holistic view of how various hazards within our area of competence, whether they are intercepted or identified at point of entry to the state or identified later during an outbreak, can be anticipated, managed and remediated. This is the first annual report of the Specialist Section and it stands as a testament to the wisdom of the decision to amalgamate the associated units. It is also a testament to our successful collaborations with professionals in associated fields of endeavour. In that regard we would like to acknowledge the assistance we received from our Environmental Health Officer colleagues throughout the Board and our colleagues in the Department of Public Health; the Public Health Laboratory; Cherry Orchard Hospital; the Public Analyst's Laboratory, Sir Patrick Dun's Hospital and Medical Officers in Community Services Areas.en_GB
