dc.description | The National Council’s third annual conference was attended this year by almost 1,000 nurses and midwives. A detailed account of the contents of the conference is contained in this newsletter. The annual conference has become one of the most important events of the year for nurses and midwives, affording as many as possible the opportunity to come together to discuss issues of central importance to the development of the profession and of the services. The theme for this year’s conference was Achieving Strategic Outcomes: The Interdisciplinary Challenge. The appropriateness of the theme was underlined by the recent publication of the Report of the National Task Force on Medical Staffing, also known as The Hanly Report. Interdisciplinary working is becoming a key strategy in achieving increased effectiveness in the use of medical manpower, and nursing and midwifery occupy a central position in this strategy. The importance of our profession is underlined by the following quotation from the report: “The nursing profession plays a central role in the health system. Nurses are often the first point of contact for patients. They comprise almost 40% of the healthcare workforce and provide care over a 24 hour, 7 day period. | en_GB |
