The National Council for the Professional Development of Nursing and Midwifery (the National Council) was established in 1999 (SI No 376) following the recommendations of the Commission on Nursing. Standards and frameworks developed and implemented by the National Council ensures that nursing and midwifery practice in Ireland develops in a safe and co-ordinated manner in the interests of patient/client care and in line with international best practice.
