dc.descriptionThe Cardiac Surgery Option Appraisal Group was established by the Minister for Health. Mr Michael Noonan T D . In May 1996 to review and report on proposals for the development of additional cardiac surgery facilities in this country with particular reference to the location of 500 additional procedures. The terms of reference of the Group were as follows: to assess the additional cardiac surgery needs having regard to, Inter alia. (I) the prevalence of coronary heart disease In Ireland. (11) the level of cardiac surgery in other western countries and (111) ongoing developments In both cardiac surgery and cardiology, (1V) Indicate how the public hospital capacity for open heart surgery can be expanded over the next two to three years. to recommend where within the public hospital system, the additional activity should be undertaken, having regard to the need to obtain optimum value for the Investment required, and to prepare a report with recommendations for presentation to the Ministeren_GB
