dc.description.abstract | Throughout this report you will read of the many research projects that are underway in the various clinical areas of the hospital. The hospital provides many opportunities for training in a wide variety of clinical and service areas. These activities lead to cross clinical collaboration and help to stimulate the working environment of the staff in the various departments. The wide variety of clinical special ties enhance the opportunities for research and encourages development. For example, the development of major head and neck surgery requires the collaboration of Plastics and Reconstructive Surgery, ENT, Maxillofacial and General Surgery together with the clinical support services available in the Pathology Laboratory, Diagnostic Imaging, Speech Therapy and Physiotherapy. The outcomes of research often transfer to clinical practice and provide more treatment options to the clinician. This is well illustrated in the report of the Department of the Haematology and Oncology. The development of peripheral blood stem cell harvests will have a significant impact on the treatment of malignant diseases. This learning environment has also encouraged many staff in the support areas to pursue further education and higher degree courses, thus enhancing the service we give to our patients. The hospital, throughout 1994, has continued to improve its capital stock, develop new services, improve existing services and maintain its place at the top level of health care in this country. At the same time we have been conscious of the need to improve our efficiency while continuing to deliver an effective and user friendly service to patients who come under our care. | |
