During 1998 the Rotunda delivered 6,283 mothers of 6,387 babies. There were 52 perinatal deaths giving an uncorrected perinatal mortality rate of 8.1. The number of mothers delivered represents an increase of 2% on the number of mothers delivered last year. This increase is slightly smaller than predicted as at one stage in the year the increase over 1997 was running at 6%. It is now expected that the number of babies delivered in the Dublin area will gradually increase over the next 5 to 7 years; presumably these figures will be very much influenced by the economic climate of the time. At the end of 1998 the hospital received the long awaited permission to improve our paediatric facilities. Essentially we will be amalgamating our Paediatric Unit with our Nenatatal Intensive Care Unit and improving both substantially at the same time. It is hoped to go to tender for these works in late 1999 and building work to commence in early 2000. These works should improve the care offered to sick babies in the Hospital and will at last reflect the skill and dedication of the paediatric staff, both medical and nursing. Also late in 1999 we hope to continue a significant redevelopment of the third floor postnatal facilities which will upgrade sufficiently the level of accommodation and privacy which postnatal patients now need.en_GB
