The number of children being placed for adoption with non-relatives continues to decline. The decline is reflected in the number of applications for adoption orders made to the Board in respect of children placed by registered adoption societies and health boards. In 1986 the Board received 554 such applications, compared with 610 in the previous year. Family adoptions, on the other hand, continue to account for a significant proportion of applications received and adoption orders made. Almost one third (32%) of the 831 applications received during 1986 were in respect of family adoptions. Of the 800 orders made by the Board during the year under review, 216 (27%) were for children adopted within their natural family. In 162 (20%) of these cases, the adopters were the child's natural mother and her husband. In response to the growing number of adopted persons seeking information about their natural background, most adoption agencies now provide a counselling service for such persons. The Board itself offers a counselling service for the benefit of persons whose adoptions were arranged otherwise than by an adoption agency .en_GB
