dc.descriptionIn late August 1981 the Department of Foreign Affairs forwarded copies of Council of Europe Recommendation No . R. (81)1 on Regulations for Automated Medical Data Banks to the Department of Health. The Recommendation set out ways in which automated (and manual) medical data should be dealt with in order to safeguard the individual's rights to privacy in so far as health data was concerned. The principles contained in the recommendation are drawn from the Council of Europe Convention for the protection of individuals with regard to automatic processing of personal data. (Appendix of the Recommendation is attached at Appendix 1) An ad-hoc Departmental Group was set up in early October 1981en_GB
