On the basis of data in General Hospitals Services Division there was a total of 10,297 beds for the care of long stay geriatric and young chronic sick patients in 1981. Our records classify these beds as long stay nursing or welfare accommodation but in view of the manner in which beds are used. This classification is not very reliable and it is probably safer simply to look at the total figure. Details of the number of beds in each institution and home are shown as items 1 and 2 in the appendices 1 to 6 attached where the national breakdown as between long stay and welfare is also shown. Some of the detail in those appendices is summarised in Table 1 attached.en_GB
