| dc.description | This volume of statistical information relevant to the health services is designed to give a comprehensive picture of the services that are available and the extent of their use. The tables have been selected firstly to measure services as they are now available or activities as they are now performed; secondly to measure changes that have taken place in these services or activities over a period of years; thirdly to compare the Irish figures with corresponding figures for other countries. The information is set out in a number of separate sections. Section A contains a selection of tables and graphs on population and vital statistics which are closely related to the health services. Each of the Sections B to G represents a programme of the health services and contains statistical information relevant to that programme, together with a brief description of the services provided. The following programmes are dealt with: Section B-Community Protection Programme Section C-Community Health Services Section D-Community Welfare Services Section E- Psychiatric Services Section F- Services for the Handicapped Section G-General Hospital Services Sections H, J and K provide information on manpower, expenditure and eligibility for services respectively. In general, the information contained in the tables is based on returns made to the Department of Health.
