dc.description | During the last 15 years there has been wide spread discussion and consultation on how the country's general hospital system should be organised in the future to meet the ever increasing demands being made on the service through advances in medical . science and the expectations of t he population. In that time, the Consultative Council on the General Hospital Services(the Fitzgerald Report issued its report and made wide ranging recommendations for the future hospital system. The Council recommended that specialist facilities should be concentrated in fever hospitals and proposed concentration of facilities for acute hospital care in 12 centres. While the general concept of the Council's report was at that time (1968} accepted in principle it became clear in subsequent years that the concept did not have sufficient regard to the practical needs and wishes of the people. Following the establishment of Comhairle na nOspideal, that body was asked in 1973 to establish guidelines which could be applied in the determination of a plan for general hospital development . | en_GB |
