The child health theme of this Public Health Annual Report demonstrates the many factors which determine the present and future health of children - the report shows the current limitations in measuring children's health status and outlines the commitment of the Mid-Western Health Board towards promoting the health of children and future adults. In June 1999 the Mid-Western Health Board became the first health board to approve a strategy for child health. The reasons for taking this step included: Demographic changes in our population due to increasing birth rates and inward migration to the Mid-West. The fact that services for children are provided right across the spectrum of health services including acute, primary, community and voluntary sectors. Recognising the importance of consumer participation in healthcare. Support for the concept of the basic entitlement of a child to grow and develop in health as defined by the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of a Child.en_GB
