dc.description | Hepatitis C is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide and its optimum care poses a challenge to those involved in the planning and delivery of health and socia1 care services. 'Open space' is a qualitative m~thodology used to enable a large and diverse group of people to explore complicated issues in a limited time. Organic and self-organising, the agenda is set by participants, who subsequently facilitate qualitative discussion at impromptu workshops, the contents of which are simultaneously documented. The technique has been used extensively in areas such as social and commercial sectors. A total of 60 health and social care professionals and service-users attended a one-day 'Open Space event' which examined two related issues: important considerations in fonnulating a region-wide policy on hepatitis C and optimum approaches to these considerations. Each issue was discussed during a half-day session. Participants recorded the proceedings manually and these proceedings were subsequently reviewed by a team of qualitative researchers. The proceedings were subjected to thematic analysis and the dominant themes to emerge are presented in this report. The important issues identified by the event were: • the role of health promotion • the role of the media • enhanced serv ice provision • the importance of research and its link to policy. The important actions to address these issues were identified as: • the role of peer support • education and training • the provision of health professionals to coordinate and facilitate liaison and communication between services • improving access to services | en_GB |
