| dc.description | The Irish National Children‟s Strategy (NCS, 2000) includes the goal that children will receive quality supports and services. Fourteen objectives were developed in pursuit of this goal, including „that children will benefit from a built and natural environment that supports their physical and emotional well-being‟. It was envisaged in the NCS that policy implementation would happen locally. This paper assesses how this objective has been articulated in local policy on the urban built environment and how it supports children‟s and young people‟s play, recreation and mobility in their communities, particularly for those children living in social housing. A case study approach is adopted, exploring the policies of two Irish local authorities – Galway City Council and South Dublin County Council – and interviewing key stakeholders in both locations. After a discussion of the findings, implications for current policy, at national and local levels, are outlined. | en_GB |
