Escherichia coli (E. coli) is the name given to a large family of bacteria found in the gut of humans and animals. Most E. coli are harmless, but some types, like E. coli O157, can cause serious illness in humans, ranging from diarrhoea, to kidney damage, brain disease, and even death. There is no immediate cure for E. coli O157 infection. Treatment can only support the patient; it can not kill the E. coli O157 bacteria or prevent complications developing.en
