DescriptionThis report focuses on the relative poverty rate of Irish elderly, and aims to study the connection between potential changes to the state pension system and such poverty rates. The majority of Irish elderly depend in fact almost exclusively on the state old age or retirement pension as their main source of income, so that such changes are expected to have a noticeable effect. In particular we use data produced by a dynamic microsimulation model (LIAM) to simulate how the poverty rate of Irish elderly in the future might change if some pension reform proposals discussed in the 2007 Green Paper were indeed introduced instead of the current Irish pension system.
