Abstract
I am delighted to contribute this foreword to the third Audit Report of the Cardio Thoracic Unit at st. James's for the year 2002. The overriding impression gleaned from the report is one of firm consolidation of and advancement on the early stage establishment of the unit, with an even greater and more developed emphasis on quality measurement and validation. The unit has once again considerably exceeded its baseline funded activity level by some 116 cases (566 vs 450). Waiting numbers and times have also been further improved. At the end of 2002, no patient was waiting greater than 6 months for surgery. Also, 62% of presenting patients had their procedure undertaken within a one-month period following presentation. The most evident development in the past year however centres on the significant advances made in measuring and assuring the safety and quality of services provided in the Unit. In addition to availability of within-unit comparative data now covering three years of activity, the Centre is now a full participant in the UK and Ireland Cardiac Surgery benchmarking programme, which facilitates measurement of its performance against similar programmes in the UK and Ireland. It is the only Unit in Ireland returning risk stratified data and is identified in associated reports as one of the Centres contributing most complete data to the initiative. Probably most importantly, the relative and absol ute performance measurement outcomes show results at St. James's to be amongst the better in the study report. It is immensely important and reassuring for patients of the Unit. their families and indeed the public generally that this information is enthusiastically contributed and made available by the Centre. and that the results testify to the efficacy and excellence of services provided.
