Long term oxygen therapy improves survival when used in those patients with appropriate indications and for a minimum of 15 hours a day (ideally continuously).1,2 Specific initiatives have taken place around the country to improve the safety and appropriateness of oxygen use within the community.3 Concerns were raised during the national COPD strategy consultation process3 regarding the use of long term oxygen therapy within the community. It was therefore decided to gather further information on use of home oxygen in each Local Health Area. The primary aim of this survey was to describe activity and costs pertaining to the use of home oxygen for patients with COPD and relevant policy and procedures from the point of view of community services.
