Description:
Infant mortality in Western societies over the past 30 years has been declining. In Ireland the rate has fallen from 25 per 1,000 live births in 1961 to 8.2 per 1,000 live births in 1991. The rapid reduction in infant mortality in the first days and weeks of life has resulted, in an increasing proportion of infant deaths occurring in the post-neonatal period (4 weeks to 1 year). Almost 90% of deaths attributed to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) occur In the post-neonatal period and since 1980 SIDS accounts for 40% to 60% of all deaths in this period.
