This Policy Document has beeh prepared by the Policy Document Committee established by the Association of Occupational Therapists of Ireland in May, 1981. It was clear from the enthusiasm shown by Occupational Therapists in 1979, that there was a need to determine the role of the Occupational Therapist today. lnitially an attempt was made to examine the question by the formation of various interest groups but in the course of these meetings it became obvious that a more vigorous study of the professon should be carried out. This fact and the Occupational Therapist's potential contribution to statutory services prompted the Association of Occupational Therapists of Ireland to establish this Policy Document Committee in May 1981.
