Description:
The Minister for Local Government in January, 1972 introduced a special grant for the provision of additional rooms or alterations to be carried out in houses to meet the special needs of physically disabled people. This grant was paid on a non-statutory basis until the Housing (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1979 validated the position. The Housing Regulations (1980), made under the Act of 1979, inter alia, enabled Local Authorities to give a grant to a person for the provision of additional room or chalet or for the carrying out of other structural works, which in the of the authority: re reasonably necessary for the purpose of rendering a house more suitable for the accommodation of a member of a household who is either - (a) physically handicapped and the works are necessary for his proper accommodation, or (b) suffering from severe mental handicap or severe mental illness, for which he is undergoing treatment, and the works are necessary for his proper treatment and accommodation.
