Vital Statistics The population at the 9th April, 1956, was 2,898,264 persdns (1,462,928 males and 1,435,336 females) according to the results of the 1956 Census of Population. Marriages, Births and Deaths Marriages in 1956 totalled 16,761, giving a rate of 5.8 per thousand population. The following table shows the marriage rates in Ireland apd neighbouring countries in the years 1954-1956:
