Description:
1993, the European Year of Older People and Solidarity between Generations is, I believe, an important initiative in increasing awareness and understanding between the younger and older generations of our society. Older and younger people have a lot to learn and share with one another and this year provides an ideal opportunity for both young and old to discover and explore the many challenges facing them as citizens of our community. I congratulate the National Council for the Elderly for publishing this excellent Bearing Fruit programme. Its purpose is to promote positive attitudes to ageing and to older people in a real and practical way. through the classroom. I am sure that it will achieve its aim and assist the younger and older generations deepen their mutual respect and sense of solidarity. Misunderstandings based on lack of knowledge can sometimes create barriers between generations. I believe that the Bearing Fruit programme will encourage young people to appreciate the contribution which the oldest generation has made and continues to make to our society. Niamh Bhreathnach. Minister for Education.
