The Midland Health Board provides a comprehensive range of services for persons with a mental handicap living within its area of responsibility . These services are provided by a mix of statutory, non statutory and voluntary bodies and include: Assessment and Counselling Services. Day Care Services. Special Schools/Special Classes. Placement Services. Workshops. Residential Centres. Community Residences. Home Support Services. The provision of services is based on the principles of normalistaion and Quality of Life. Normalisation seeks to provide persons with a mental handicap with life experiences in ordinary settings. Services are designed and delivered in ways which are likely to result in increasing competence and social participation for individuals in increasing social acceptance for handicapped people as a group. Allied to the principle of normalisation is that of ensuring a quality of life for persons with a mental handicap, as distinct from the traditional health care model.
