Description:
We are pleased to present the report Activities of Irish Psychiatric Services for the year 2001. The report presents data on all admissions to, and discharges from, psychiatric in-patient facilities in Ireland in 2001. In addition, it presents data on the psychiatric in-patient census at the end of the year, along with data on community psychiatric services. Rates reported are per 100,000 population aged 16 years and over. Part I of the report deals with admissions to, and discharges (including deaths) from, psychiatric inpatient facilities in Ireland. Cross-sectional data are presented nationally, regionally (by health board area), locally (by individual hospital) and by hospital type. A range of classificatory variables is used to present the data i.e. gender, age, marital status, socia-economic group, legal status, diagnosis and length of stay. These data are obtained from the National Psychiatric In-Patient Reporting System (NPIRS),.the only national psychiatric in'patient database In Ireland. This database was established in 1971 arising from the recommendations of the Commission of Enquiry on Mental Illness (Department of Health, 1966) and is maintained by the Health Research Board (HRB). However, annual reports have been published since 1965 from data supplied by the Department of Health, at the instigation of the Commission. A full list of these publications is available in the Appendix and on the HRB's website www.hrb.ie.
